attention iconattention iconWeb Site Migration Underway ~~ This is the old KCSD site

Beginning March 8, the District is migrating to a new web site.  The new website should be fully available at www.kcsd.k12.pa.us (or www.kcsd.us) by Saturday morning (March 9).  Content on this site will remain in archive form only; this site is no longer being actively updated.  Content from here will be moved to the new site, but it will take some time; once content has been moved, it may disappear from this old site to avoid confusion.
Thank you for your patience during this process.

Students Requiring Modified Diets

Procedures for Serving Students Who Require Modified Diets

The food service department will accommodate modified diets for students according to the following guidelines.

  1. Lactose Intolerance – A reaction of the body's metabolic system to a component of milk products resulting in an interference with digestion.
    • Students may substitute soy milk for the milk beverage offered with breakfast or lunch if the food service office receives a completed Medical Plan of Care for School Food Service (Students with Disabilities and Non-Disabling Special Dietary Needs) form from the parent/guardian. Soy milk is the only available substitute. Federal regulations prohibits juice or water substitutes.
  2. Food Allergies – A reaction of the body's immune system to treat the food ingested as a foreign or unfriendly substance, causing the body to release antibodies to counter the perceived "invasion".
    • Food substitutions will be made as required by the child's physician for allergies covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (severe/life-threatening). Foods containing allergens will be avoided and will be replaced with acceptable alternatives either from the planned menu or from a menu written by the parent/physician/registered dietitian.
    • Allergies not covered under the American's with Disabilities Act (not severe/life-threatening) will be accommodated within the framework of the planned menu.

    • Menu accommodations will be made if:
      1. The food service office receives a completed Medical Plan of Care for School Food Service (Students with Disabilities and Non-Disabling Special Dietary Needs) form from the parent/guardian signed by a physician.
      2. The parent/guardian meets with the food service director to review menus, recipes, and ingredient lists.
      3. The food service department is notified in advance of the days the child will be eating lunch at school and the menu items selected.
    • The parent/guardian will provide the food service department with a modified diet action plan at the start of each school year containing pertinent information to be posted in the kitchen.
  3. Special Diets – Those diets requiring specific food nutrients to be tracked as a result of a disability. A "person with a disability" means any person who has a physical or mental impairment substantially limiting one or more major life activity.
    • Special diets will be accommodated if:
      1. The food service office receives a completed Medical Plan of Care for School Food Service (Students with Disabilities and Non-Disabling Special Dietary Needs) form from the parent/guardian and signed by a physician. Medical Plan of Care for School Food Service pdfMedical Plan of Care 2017
      2. A physician or a registered dietitian provides a specific diet including recipes, serving sizes, and any other necessary specifications.
      3. The parent/guardian and physician/registered dietitian meet with the food service director to review menus, recipes, and ingredient lists.
      4. The food service department is notified in advance of the days the child will be eating lunch at school and the menu items selected.
    • The parent/guardian will provide the food service department with a modified diet action plan at the start of each school year containing pertinent information to be posted in the kitchen. The sheet will contain at least the student's name and picture, a list of foods to be avoided, a list of possible reactions, emergency contacts, and phone numbers.
  4. Vegetarianism – For those students requiring meatless meal choices, the district will accommodate menu modifications according to the following guidelines.
    • Students can request a bagel & cream cheese, grilled cheese sandwich, or chef salad without meat in place of the menued entrees if:
      1. The food service office receives a statement from the parent/guardian requesting the availability of occasional menu modifications as a result of vegetarian food preferences.
      2. No other meatless entrée is offered on the menu on that given day.
      3. The food service department is notified in advance of the days the child will be requiring an alternate entree. A monthly menu can be submitted to the school cafeteria with the menu choices changed as necessary. If a meatless choice is available on the menu (cheese hoagie, cereal & yogurt, etc.), the menu change request will be denied.
